Field Hockey Shuts Out Anna Maria, 4-0

PAXTON, Mass. (9/4/2024) – Behind a pair of goals from junior Taylor Breen, the Nichols College Field Hockey team grabbed their first win of the season, with a 4-0 win over Anna Maria on Wednesday evening.

Breen scored a pair of goals, while classmate Kaelyn Casper scored once and tallied an assist, and freshman Asya Osei-Opoku scored her first collegiate goal and added an assist. Junior Merle Steinau pitched in with an assist for the Bison. Senior Sophia Venable made a pair of saves in the win.

The Bison opened the scoring at the 2:45 mark of the first quarter when they were awarded a penalty corner. Breen sent the ball into play and Steinau faked a shot and passed back to Breen who fired the shot towards the back post Osei-Opoku redirected the shot on goal and Breen finished it off for a 1-0 Bison lead.

Nichols added their second tally of the first half when Casper fired a shot from the top of the arch and beat the goalie to the far side, doubling the Bison lead. The pass came from Steinau.

Breen tallied one more time before the end of the half, thanks to great passing between Breen, Steinau, and Casper. Breen sent a pass off the penalty corner to Casper who tapped to Steinau, Steinau returned the feed to Casper, whose shot was deflected, and Breen finished off the ball.

Another Bison penalty corner resulted in the fourth goal of the evening. Breen the inbound, found Casper whose shot was blocked down, but Osei-Opoku was there to bury the loose ball. This her first collegiate goal, and a 4-0 Bison lead.

Nichols (1-2) will return for their home opener against Wheaton College (Mass.) on Saturday, September 7th, the game is set for 1:00 p.m.
