Aquino Scores First Goal in Loss to Anchormen

PROVIDENCE, R.I.(9/25/2024)- The Nichols College men's soccer team faced a tough road match against the Rhode Island College Anchormen, in non-conference action Wednesday night in Rhode Island. The home-side Anchormen came out with the win 3-1.

The Anchormen took an early 1-0 lead three minutes into the game when a free-kick was placed perfectly on the ground near the Bison's defensive 18-yard box. While the Bison kept their opposition at bay for the remainder of the half, they allowed the second goal of the match in the 43rd minute to double Rhode Island College's lead to 2-0 as the teams headed into the break.

At halftime, Nichols made a change in goal, with Derek Axon replacing starter Franco Barreto Santana who recorded two saves on the day. The Anchormen found their third goal early in the second half, widening the lead to 3-0, despite the shift. The Bison, however, refused to back down. In the 84th minute, sophomore Shawn Jakob Aquino delivered a highlight moment, scoring his first career goal for Nichols, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The Anchormen settled for a 3-1 win as Nichols kept pushing.

Looking ahead, the Bison look to bounce back this Saturday, September 28, at home against the Wentworth Leopards. The match is set to kick off at noon on the Nichols Soccer Field. The Bison seek their first conference win on the season, as they now sit at 3-5 (0-1 CNE) on the year.
