CHICOPEE, Mass. (9/11/2024) – Behind a pair of hattricks from junior
Taylor Breen and sophomore
Sofia Calabro, the Nichols College field hockey team scored their most goals in nearly 11 years as the toppled Elms College, 10-1, on Wednesday afternoon from Leary Field.
Breen scored three goals and added an assist, while Calabro scored three times and chipped in with a pair of assists. Junior
Kaelyn Casper also added two goals, and classmate
Merle Steinau scored two goals. Freshman
Morgan Belyea also tallied an assist.
The 10 Bison goals is the most goals scored since Nichols scored 10 goals against Western New England on September 28, 2013. The 10 goals are the seventh most goals scored in program history.
It took nearly 12 minutes for the Bison to hit pay dirt, but Casper opened the scoring for Nichols and Breen added an assist. Breen scored her first goals of the game less than a minute later for a 2-0 Nichols lead. Calabro then scored 36 second later, thanks to a pass from Belyea. This was Belyea's first collegiate point. Nichols led 3-0 after 15 minutes of play.
Steinau jumped in on the scoring and Breen added her second goal of the game with 1:56 remaining in the first half, for a 5-0 Bison lead at the half.
Breen capped off her third career hattrick to make it 6-0 Nichols, and the assist coming from Calabro. Steinau scored her second goal of the game for a 7-0 lead and Elms stopped the shut out with a goal in the third quarter. Casper scored to continue adding to the Bison lead, making it 8-1. Calabro closed out the game with a pair of goals to secure her first collegiate hattrick in the win.
Calabro's eight points is the most for the Bison since Emily Widdison did so in 2011 against Western New England. Breen's seven points tied her career high, when she did so last year against UMaine Farmington.
Senior
Sophia Venable started the first half of the game and did not face a shot, sophomore
Fallyn Belisle allowed one goal for the Bison in the combined win. The Nichols defense held the Elms offense to one shot on goal for the game.
Nichols (2-3) will return home on September 14, when they face off against Mount Holyoke at 5:00 p.m. from Vendetti Field.
