Bel Air, Maryland (3/10/2024)- The Nichols Men's Lacrosse team opened their spring break trip with a narrow 6-5 loss to New York-based Alfred University on Sunday afternoon at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland.
It was the Bison that jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first quarter thanks to unassisted goals from sophomore Conor Doherty, with his team-leading 7th of the year, and graduate student Ryan Warner who notched his 3rd with just 4 seconds to play in the opened 15.
In the second frame, the Saxons responded with three goals of their own to take a 3-2 lead going into halftime. In the third and fourth quarters, the teams would exchange goals back and forth. Conor Doherty opened second-half scoring for the Bison off a pass from senior Colby Gillis. CJ Cadigan then got onto the scoresheet with his 5th of the season with Doherty picking up the assist. Alfred's Kevin Matson would then score two unassisted goals for the Saxon's to open the fourth quarter, including the game-winner with just over six minutes to play. John Caserta would score his second of the year for the Bison to cut the lead to one, but the Bison would be unable to catch the Saxons.
The shots stood at 27-30 in favor of the Bison. Goaltender Brady Morgan got his 5th consecutive start of the season recording 11 saves in 55 minutes of action. Carter Renaud saw just under 5 minutes of action in relief. The Bison went 23-28 in clears on the day.
With the loss, Nichols falls to 3-2 on the season, and Alfred jumps to 4-0 with the win.
The Bison continue their spring break trip as they head to Eastern University in St. David's, PA for a matchup with the Eagles. That game is set for Thursday, March 14th at 3:30 PM.
