UNE Edges Out Men's Hockey in Shootout

HARRISVILLE, R.I. (2/10/2024) – Freshmen Tristan Kimmen scored the game tying goal with 52 seconds remaining in the third period as the Nichols College men's hockey team earned a 3-3 tie against the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action. The Nor'easters grabbed the extra point in the shootout.

Kimmen scored his second goal of the season for the Bison. Freshmen Zack Kent and Zach Vandale each scored goals in the game. Seniors Philip Bjorkman, Dylan McMahon, Sebastian Miedema, junior Gabe Temple and freshmen Aidan Flynn all tallied assist in the tie.

Junior Tyler Bost stood on his head once again for the Bison. Bost made 44 saves in the tie, including making 18 saves in the third period, to keep Nichols within a goal.

The Bison opened the scoring on the power-play just seven minutes into the first period. For the second time in as many games, Nichols found themselves with a 5 on 3 opportunity. Temple fired a pass over to Miedema who one timed a shot. The initial shot was stopped, and McMahon centered the rebound and Kent potted home the puck. This was Kent's second goal of the season, with his first goal coming on Friday.

UNE responded two minutes later to even the score at 1-1. As time expired in the first period, Vandale whipped a backhand at the net that snuck through the net minder's legs and across the goal line as time expired in the period. This game Nichols a 2-1 lead, as they went into the dressing room. Flynn earned the helper on the goal.

Nichols went 1-3 on the power-play in the first period and was 1-1 on the penalty-kill. UNE controlled the shot totals, with a 13-9 edge after 20 minutes
The Nor'easters pulled even once again, this time on the power-play to make it 2-2 with 11 minutes to go in the second period. UNE pulled themselves in front, with their second power-play goal, this one at the 6:15 mark of the third period.

With just over a minute to go in the final period, Nichols pulled the goalie for the extra skater. This move proved positive, on the next face-off Nichols won the draw and Bjorkman fired a shot from the point that was deflected in front by Kimmen and found its way into the back of the net for a tie game.

Nichols earned a much-needed point to push themselves to 18 points on the season into fifth place in the CCC standings, as the Bison enter the final game of the season next weekend. Nichols was out shot 47-26 in the game and went 1-6 on the power-play and was 4-6 on the penalty-kill.

The Bison will wrap up the regular season on Friday night, February 16, as they face off against Endicott College, with puck drop set for 5:40 p.m.
