WORCESTER, Mass. (1/6/2024) –The Nichols College women's hockey team took on the Anna Maria AMCATS in a non-conference tilt at the Buffone Arena in Worcester on Saturday evening. The Bison saw goals from three freshman to put the visitors ahead with a 3-1 win.
It took the Bison just over 6 minutes to open the scoring, when freshman
Anneliese Klein put the visiting Bison ahead 1-0 on an unassisted tally. The goal was Klein's 7
th goal of the season, pushing her past teammate
Grace Wiggett for the team lead.
Just over 10 minutes later, the home side AMCATS responded with a goal of their own to notch the game up at one a piece. But that tie wouldn't hold for long as freshman
Victoria Khou converted off a
Grace Melanson play to regain the one goal lead for the Bison just 10 seconds later.
Second period action would be scoreless with the Bison outshooting the AMCATS 43-15 though two periods of play.
After a massive 5 on 3 penalty kill for the Bison, it was another freshman in
Cela MacDougall who powered home her first collegiate goal. MacDougall finished off a pass from captain
Meghan McElaney from the corner. The AMCATS would pull their goalie for the extra attacker late in the third but would be unable to solve the Bison's defense.
Goaltender
Anamary Pulgar got the nod in goal for the Bison, where her 26 saves were good for her third collegiate victory to remain perfect at 3-0.
The Bison went on take the game by a final of 3-1. The Bison outshot the AMACTS 50-27 in the game. Neither team could find the back of the net on the powerplay, and the Bison edged the AMCATS 13 to 4 in blocked shots and 38 to 26 in the faceoff circle.
