Seahawks Sneak Past Bison, 4-2

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (1/25/2024) – Four unanswered goals from Salve Regina University helped propel the Seahawks past the Nichols College women's hockey team on Thursday night from St. George's Ice Rink. The Bison lost 4-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.

Sophomore Avery Moriarty and freshmen Cela MacDougall both scored for the Bison in the loss. Sophomore Taylor Breen and senior Grace Melanson each added assists for the Bison.

Moriarty opened the scoring for the Bison at the 4:36 mark. She gathered in the drop pass off the stick of Breen and fired a no angle shot along the goal line that snuck through the pads of Ellee Kopecky. This was Moriarty's second goal of the season the assist from Breen was her second point of the season.

The Bison doubled up their lead with just over a minute remaining in the period on the power-play. MacDougall and Khou played pass before MacDougall walked in and ripped a shot from the top of the right circle. Her shot was deflected down and landed behind the goalie for a 2-0 Nichols lead.

The Bison carried a 2-0 lead into the dressing room after 20 minutes of action. Each side matched each other with eight shots a piece. Nichols was 1-1 on the penalty kill and 1-1 on the power-play as well.

The Seahawks cut into the Bison lead with a wrist shot that beat junior McKenzie Muir over her shoulder, to open the scoring in the second frame. Salve added the equalizer 28 seconds later and took a 2-2 score into the locker room.

In the third period, the Seahawks kept up their momentum with two more goals in the period both coming in the final three minutes, including an empty net. Nichols fell to Salve Regina 4-2.

Muir made 26 saves in the loss for the Bison. Nichols went 1-2 on the power-play and 2-3 on the penalty kill in the effort.
