DUDLEY, Mass. (9/4/23) – The Nichols College men's soccer team returned home to the Nichols Soccer Field for a Labor Day non-conference tilt with Rhode Island College. The Bison were sunk by the Anchormen by a score of 2-1.
With the loss, Nichols fell to 1-2 on the year, while the Anchormen maintained their clean sheet and moved to 2-0 on the season.
The Bison opened the scoring in the match when an Anchormen foul in the box sent
William Pugliese-Savage for a penalty kick, resulting in him wiring a shot low right side past the Anchormen netminder. But that Bison lead didn't last long, as under 2 minutes later, as Jonathon Oliveira picked up the ball low in his own end, and blasted up the left side of the field, and shot a rocket by Nichols'
Derek Axon.
The teams would continue exchanging chances, and with physical play picking up. But the games deciding goal came off another foul in the box. With less than 5 minutes to play, RIC's goal scorer Oliveira lined up for a PK, and doubled down on his scoring for the day. That goal would lift the Anchormen over the Bison by a score of 2-1.
Men's soccer returns to action on Friday September 8
th for a match against MCLA in North Adams, with kickoff set for 2pm.
