Kaelyn Casper ad freshman
Sofia Calabro each scored twice as the Nichols College field hockey team earned their second shut out of the season with a 5-0 win over Elms College on Wednesday evening. The Bison earned their third win of the season.
Casper finished the night with five points (two goals and an assist) and Calabro found the back of the net twice for the Bison. Sophomore
Taylor Breen finished with a found point night (one goal and two assists) and classmate
Merle Steinau chipped in with two helpers. Freshman
Katherine Hearn tallied her first collegiate point with an assist on the opening goal.
The Bison recorded their second most shots in program history, with the 65 shots they had on Wednesday evening. The Bison also held the Blazers to zero shots on goal.
Casper opened the scoring 7:14 into the first quarter to give the Bison and early 1-0 lead. Hearn had the initial shot that was turned away by the Blazers' net minder and Casper was there to clean up the rebound. This was Casper's third goal of the season.
Calabro scored her first goal of the evening with just under three minutes to play in the half. Breen went into the corner and forced a turnover and passed to Casper, who returned it back to Breen. She then centered a pass to Calabro who redirected the pass into the back of the net.
The Bison continued to add the pressure in the second half of the game. Casper cashed in for the second time on the night and this time the goal came off the stick of Steianu for a 3-0 lead. Calabro made it a 4-0 lead less then two minutes later. Casper tallied the assist for a five-point evening, this total set a new career high for the second year forward.
The fifth goal came off a set play from a penalty corner. Breen inbound the ball to Steinau at the stop of the arch. Steianu fired a shot and Breen deflected past the goalie and into the back of the net for her team leading sixth goal of the season.
Junior
Sophia Venable recorded her second shut out of the season in the win for Nichols.
Nichols will get back to action on Saturday afternoon, as they face off against conference opponent Endicott. That game will begin at 2 p.m. from Vendetti Field.
