WENHAM, Mass. – The Nichols softball team split a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader with Gordon on Friday evening, dropping the first game 9-4, before taking game two 5-1. The Bison now stand with a record of 18-17-1 (8-8 CCC), while Gordon is now 18-20 (7-9 CCC) on the season.
Nichols are back in action on Sunday, April 30 when they take on Roger Williams at home for senior day. Game one of the doubleheader is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
Gordon 9, Nichols 4
After a scoreless three innings, the Bison finally got on the board in the top of the fourth as an error by the first baseman led to two runs. Gordon answered back with a big bottom of the fourth, plating five runs on five hits, one walk, and an error to take a 5-2 lead.
Nichols responded in the top of the fifth, as
Mackenzie Jackson singled up the middle, scoring
Allie Brown and cutting the Gordon lead to two. The Fighting Scots stayed hot at the plate in the bottom of the inning, this time bringing in four runs on three hits and three walks to extend their lead to six. The Bison would make it 9-4 in the seventh on
Erin Gour's fourth home run of the campaign, but Gordon recorded the final three outs to come away with the win.
Gour and Jackson each had two hits, both picking up an RBI in the process. Starting pitcher
Chelsea Indyk tossed three innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits and striking out two.
Nichols 5, Gordon 1
The Bison put up a crooked number in the first inning, as Gour rounded the bases once again, this time a three-run shot to give Nichols the early 3-0 lead. Two batters later, Jackson joined the home run party with a solo shot to give the Bison a four-run lead in the first inning.
Starting pitcher
Olivia Pedro kept the Scots in check, allowing just two base runners in the first three innings to maintain the 4-0 lead. Gordon picked up a run in the fourth on an RBI single, but Nichols wasted no time in getting the run back as freshman
Bailey Littlefield came through with a two-out RBI single to make it 5-1.
Pedro cruised through the final three innings, allowing just one hit the rest of the way, to get the Bison back over .500 for the season.
Ava Slavinsky, Brown, and Littlefield all had two picks apiece to lead the Bison offense. Gour knocked in three runs with her team-leading fifth home run of the year. The freshman Pedro earned her ninth win of the season, going the distance and picking up five strikeouts in the process.
