DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols softball team split a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader with Roger Williams (RWU) Wednesday afternoon on senior day, dropping the first game, 2-0, before taking game two, 7-5. The Bison remain a game over .500 at 19-18-1 (9-9 CCC), while RWU is now 11-26 (3-13 CCC).
The Bison wrap up their regular season at home on Thursday, May 4 in a non-conference doubleheader with UMass Boston. Game one is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
Roger Williams 2, Nichols 0
The game remained scoreless through three innings as starters Reagan Germano of the Hawks, and
Chelsea Indyk of the Bison were cruising through the opposing lineups. Roger Williams picked up their first baserunner in the top of the fourth, a leadoff single, which later came around to score on back-to-back errors for the first run of the game. A sacrifice fly with one out in the inning plated another run to give RWU the 2-0 advantage.
Nichols loaded the bases with one out in the bottom half of the fourth, but two backward Ks ended the threat. The Bison put runners on base in the fifth and seventh innings, but Germano was able to escape unscathed to earn her eighth win of the season.
Indyk continued her impressive stretch on the mound, going the distance and allowing just two hits and no earned runs in the loss. Shortstop
Erin Gour reached base in all three plate appearances, collecting one hit while being hit by a pitch twice.
Nichols 7, Roger Williams 5
The Hawks took the lead with a run in the first on one hit and an error, but the Bison responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to open up a big lead. Gour,
Bailey Littlefield, Mackenzie Jackson, Emma West-Testo, and
Kamryn Gurnee-Mims all added base hits in the inning, with Littlefield, West-Testo, and Gurnee-Mims picking up an RBI.
RWU answered back in the top of the second as a leadoff walk followed by a pair of singles led to a run. A sac-fly later in the inning cut the Bison lead to two. The back-and-forth continued however, as Nichols got a run back in the bottom of the second thanks to an RBI single by Jackson, making it 6-3. After a scoreless third, a leadoff error in the top of the fourth led to another RWU run, bringing the Hawks back within two.
Senior
Allie Brown led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk before Gour ripped a double down the left field line, scoring Brown to give Nichols the 7-4 lead. RWU added a run in the fifth on a two-out base knock, but starting pitcher
Olivia Pedro buckled down in the sixth and seventh innings to give Nichols the important conference win.
Jackson led the way for the Bison offense, going 3-3 with an RBI in the win. Gour, West-Testo, and Gurnee-Mims all had a pair of hits and an RBI for the home team. The freshman Pedro tossed a complete game, surrendering two earned runs to win her tenth game of the season.
