Softball Splits CCC Doubleheader With UNE

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols softball team split a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader with the University of New England (UNE) on Saturday afternoon, dropping the first game 6-3 before winning game two 4-1. The Bison are now 14-15-1 (6-6 CCC) record, while UNE is 8-21 (6-6 CCC) on the season.

The Bison return to action on Monday, April 24 when they travel to Boston, Mass. to take on Wentworth in a CCC doubleheader, with the first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.

UNE 6, Nichols 3

The Bison opened the scoring in the first on an RBI groundout by Bailey Littlefield to make it 1-0. After a scoreless second, UNE took the lead in the third, scoring two runs on three hits, including two extra-base hits. The Bison responded in the third on a Littlefield base knock to center, scoring Ava Slavinsky to tie the game at two.

UNE did most of their damage in the fifth, taking a three-run lead on three hits and an error. The Bison threatened in the bottom of the sixth, getting the tying run on base, but were only able to pick up one run to make it 5-3. UNE added an insurance run in the top of the seventh before recording the final three outs to secure the win.

Slavinsky led the way for the Bison out of the leadoff spot, collecting three hits, two runs, and an RBI. Starting pitcher Olivia Pedro took the loss, going 3.2 innings and allowing five runs (three earned).

Nichols 4, UNE 1

A pitcher's duel through three innings, the game remained scoreless until the fourth. After back-to-back singles, Mackenzie Jackson found grass in right-center to score Littlefield and give Nichols the lead. Chloe Steiniger followed up the base hit with a double to left field, scoring Allie Silliman. The Bison added two more runs in the inning, one on a wild pitch and one on an RBI single by Emma West-Testo to make it 4-0.

Starting pitcher Chelsea Indyk cruised through the Nor'easters lineup, with the only blemish coming in the sixth inning on an RBI single to center field. With a runner on and one out in the top of the seventh, a line drive was snagged by the third baseman Steiniger who then threw to first to double up the runner and give the Bison the win.

Littlefield and Jackson each picked up two hits for the Bison, with Jackson knocking in a run. Indyk earned her fifth win of the season, tossing a complete game and allowing just one run, which was unearned, and striking out eight.
