Softball Takes Game One, Drops Game Two at Wentworth

BOSTON, Mass. – After a rainout on Sunday, the Nichols softball team headed to Boston, Mass. on Monday to take on Wentworth in Commonwealth Coast Conference action (CCC), winning the first game 4-0 before dropping game two, 6-2. With the results, the Bison now sit at 15-16-1 (7-7 CCC) on the season, while the Leopards are now 24-8 (10-4 CCC).

Nichols will travel to Franklin, Mass. for a midweek doubleheader with Dean on Wednesday, April 26, with the first game set to begin at 2:30 p.m.

Nichols 4, Wentworth 0

After the Bison were set down in the first inning, Wentworth led off the bottom half with a triple. Starting pitcher Chelsea Indyk settled in after that, getting a strikeout, a groundout, and a pop-up to strand the runner at third. Indyk cruised through the next three innings, allowing just two base runners to keep the game knotted at zero.

After only recording two hits through the first four innings, the Nichols offense broke through in the top of the fifth. A two-out walk by Emma West-Testo started a rally, and Ava Slavinsky followed it up with an infield single. Left fielder Allie Brown kept the inning alive with a base hit of her own through the right side to load the bases, bringing up sophomore Erin Gour who worked a walk to force in a run, the first of the game, before Bailey Littlefield added insurance with a clutch two-RBI single to center.

The Bison added another run in the sixth, as Allie Silliman led off the inning with a ground-rule double before Emily Iannuccilli came in to pinch run. Iannuccilli eventually came around to score on a base knock by Riley Chartier to give Nichols the 4-0 advantage. The four runs were more than enough for Indyk, as she recorded the final six outs, three of them via the strikeout, to earn her sixth win of the season.

Indyk struck out a career-high 10 batters in the complete game effort, surrendering just three hits and one walk. Littlefield led the way for the offense, picking up two hits in four at-bats to go along with the two runs batted in.

Wentworth 6, Nichols 2

The Wentworth bats woke up in the first inning of game two, as they crossed the plate five times on four hits, one walk, and two errors. The game remained 5-0 until the fourth inning when Wentworth added another run on an RBI base hit to give them a six-run lead.

Nichols got on the board in the top of the sixth as a one-out single by Brown brought up Gour, who doubled to left to put runners on second and third. Littlefield added another RBI to her daily total to make it 6-1 before Lilly Fangel picked up an RBI single, cutting the Wentworth lead to four. However, the Bison were retired in order in the bottom of the seventh to give the Leopards the win.

Gour had a multi-hit game for the Bison, roping two doubles in the process. Senior Alyssa Ouellette tossed six innings in relief, allowing just one run on four hits and striking out five.
