WENHAM, Mass. – With just 1:10 remaining in overtime,
Jack Ellis blew a shot past Colin Liscomb to clinch an 11-10 victory for the Nichols men's lacrosse team over Gordon on Saturday at the Brigham Complex in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play. Nichols now holds 10-6 (4-3 CCC), while Gordon falls to 3-11 (0-7 CCC).
CJ Cadigan got the scoring underway under five minutes into the opening period before
Dylan DeRubeis doubled the lead on a strike just a minute later. Gordon would find the back of the net on a Jackson Wright goal before Nichols would score twice more on goals from Ellis and
Ryan Warner to make it 4-1 with 3:39 to play in the first. The two sides would trade goals over the final minutes of the frame to make it 5-2 heading into the second.
Colby Gillis and Ellis scored back-to-back to make it 7-2 with 10:49 remaining in the half. The Fighting Scots would rally late with two goals of their own to cut the deficit to three as the Bison led 7-4 at the halftime break.
Gordon would continue their scoring run with two more goals in the third quarter to make it 7-6 heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation.
Cian Keohane found the right time for his first goal, scoring just under six minutes into the fourth to put the Bison back up by two goals. Marco Fernando and Jackson Wright would score in rapid succession to tie the game up at 8-8, and a John Flemmi goal would give the Scots their first lead of the game with just 4:08 remaining. Ryan Stephen Long would score on a man-up opportunity to push the lead to two.
Hunter Ferreira played the hero in the closing moments of regulation for the Bison, as the grad student struck twice with under 1:30 to play to tie the contest at 10-10 and force an overtime period.
Brady Morgan would stand his ground on a Fernandez shot 14 seconds into overtime to keep the game in motion before Gillis found Ellis for the game-winning goal 2:36 later.
Ceohane (1-4-5) led all players with five points, followed closely by Ferreria (3-1-4) and Ellis (3-1-4) who each tallied four. Ferreira and Warner each forced two of the 11 Gordon turnovers as Warner and
Kyle Ettenhofer each scooped up a team-high five ground balls.
Morgan made nine saves on 19 shots in 62:50 in net for the victory.
Nichols is set to wrap up its 2023 regular-season campaign in a Wednesday night showdown in Springfield, as the Bison will travel to take on Western New England at Golden Bear Stadium at 7:00 p.m.
