NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – The Nichols Baseball team dropped a decision to non-conference opponent Wheaton at the New England Baseball Complex on Monday afternoon by the score of 15-6. With the loss, Nichols falls to 1-4 on the season, while Wheaton improves to 2-1.
Junior
Brennan Hyde got the Bison on the board in the top of the first inning with a line-drive home run over the center field fence, his third of the season. Wheaton responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
The score remained 2-1 until the fourth inning when Hyde, behind 0-2 in the count, blasted another ball over the center field wall to tie the game at two. The Lyons responded once again in the bottom of the fourth, this time with three runs to give them a 5-2 lead. After a scoreless fifth inning, Hyde came up once again, this time launching a ball the other way over the right field fence to break the program record for most home runs in a game with three. The Bison tacked on another run in the inning on a
Brad Ellis single to make it a one-run game.
The Lyons added seven runs in the bottom of the sixth, four of them coming on one swing of the bat, to take a commanding 12-4 lead. Wheaton added three more runs in the seventh inning before the Bison scored two in the top of the ninth on a
Zachary McCarthy two RBI base knock to make it 15-6.
Hyde finished the day 3-5 from the plate with three homers and three RBI.
Andrew Croteau found himself on base three times, going 1-2 with two walks.
Eric Fields struck out four in 1.2 innings in the losing effort.
Nichols looks to get back in the win column on Thursday, March 9 when they travel to Buzzards Bay to take on Mass. Maritime with the first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
