Baseball Falls Just Short at Mass. Maritime, 11-10

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Nichols baseball team fell by a score of 11-10 against Mass. Maritime at Hendy Field on Thursday evening, despite trailing by as much as seven heading into the final inning. The loss drops the Bison to 1-5 (0-0 CCC) on the season, while the Buccaneers advance to 4-2 (0-0 MASCAC).

Mass. Maritime struck first, scoring on two walks with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. The Buccaneers would expand its lead to 11-4 after a four-run eighth inning.

Down seven coming up for their last at-bats, the Bison put together a string of offense, scoring on three wild pitches to put cut the deficit to 11-7. Mass. Maritime took the ball out of Baiardi's hand and into the hand of Brown with no recorded outs in the frame. With the bases loaded, Baiardi got Taj Vera Cruz to ground out, which scored a run, cutting the hole down to three. Kyle Birks then singled down the leftfield line in the next at-bat to make it 11-9. Noah Hickey made it 11-10 when he came in to pinch hit and drove in Birks on an RBI single to center. Baiardi was able to silence the Bison bats for the final two outs of the contest and close out the comeback bid.

The Bison look to right the ship in another non-conference matchup, this time at Trinity (CT) on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at DiBenedetto Field.
