DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols women's lacrosse team fell to Salve Regina in its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener by a final score of 14-9 at Vendetti Field on Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Bison's winning streak was snapped at six games, as Nichols fell to 6-1 (0-1 CCC) while the Seahawks advanced to 4-4 (1-0 CCC).
Nichols trailed by just one at the end of the first quarter as both
Mackenzie Doran and
Hadley Houghton found the back of the net in the opening frame. Both sides continued a contested battle in the second stanza, trading goals throughout the end of the half. Salve would end up taking a 6-4 lead into the halftime break, with
Emma Patton and Houghton each scored in the second for the Bison to keep things close.
Coming out of the half, Salve Regina would strike for six-straight goals over a 9:36 span to bump its lead to 12-4. Nichols would not go down without a fight in the final twenty-plus minutes, outscoring the Seahawks 5-2 in that time frame, but the late offensive output spearheaded by
Sam Aheasy's two goals would not be enough to catch up to the visitors.
Nichols won the draw control battle, 15-12, with
McKenzie Muir leading the charge with seven of her own, followed closely by Houghton who collected four controls of her own.
Standing strong in goal was
Keri Tremblay who made 11 saves on the outing.
The Bison will look to get back on track in a Thursday night non-conference matchup with Rhode Island College scheduled for 6:00 p.m. back at Vendetti Field.
