Pulgar Earns First Win Against MCLA, 2-1

HARRISVILLE, R.I. (11/21/23) – Junior Anamary Pulgar made 17 saves and senior Grace Wiggett scored the go-ahead goal, as the Nichols College women's hockey team beat the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 2-1 at June Rockwell Levy Rink on Tuesday evening.

Wiggett scored her fourth goal of the season and freshman Anneliese Klein scored her second goal of the season to lead the way for the Bison. Freshman Victoria Khou and graduate student Kayla Currin each added assists in the game. Pulgar earned her first collegiate win in between the pipes for the Bison in her first collegiate start as well.

Klein opened the scoring for the Bison with just over three minutes remaining in the first period. The Bison controlled the majority of the period and were rewarded for their efforts. Khou dumped the puck in and grabbed the puck on the half wall. She first a shot on goal and the rebound bounced up into the air. Klein hammered in the loose puck, batting it out of the air and past the netminder for a 1-0 lead.

Nichols out shot MCLA, 20-7 in the opening frame and were a perfect 3-3 on the penalty kill.

The visitors responded with a goal of their own, in the early minutes of the period to pull even at 1-1 on the power-play. The Bison continued to up the pressure and tilted the ice in their favor out shooting the Trailblazers 25-5 in the second period and 45-12 for the game to that point.

The third period was more of the same for the Bison. They continued to dominate play and capitalized once again with their chances to make it 2-1 early in the third period. Currin flipped a shot in on the netminder and after a scramble in front of the net, the puck found Wiggett who finished off the loose puck to give Nichols a 2-1 lead.

Nichols earned a 2-1 win over MCLA, out shooting them 62-18 in the game. Nichols went 35-60 from the face off circle and was 6-7 on the penalty kill.
