Rams Hold Off Surge From Bison, 3-2

HARRISVILLE, R.I. (11/10/23) – The Nichols College women's hockey team's comeback fell short on Friday night as they lost 3-2 to the Rams of Suffolk University in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action from June Rockwell Levy Rink.

Nichols (3-2-0, 1-2-0 CCC) lost their second straight game while the visitors, Suffolk (1-4-0, 1-2-0 CCC), earned their first win of the young season. For the Bison, senior Grace Wiggett scored her second goal of the year and freshman Ema Jaskova tallied her team leading fifth goal in her rookie campaign.

The Rams opened the scoring just five minutes into the first period with a short-handed goal. Suffolk carried the puck over the line flipped a shot in on junior McKenzie Muir, who ranged to her right and the puck just skipped under her pad. Suffolk led 1-0 after 20 minutes but were out shot by Nichols, 14-9.

The Rams doubled their lead with a deflected shot from the slot that had eyes and found its way into the net for a 2-0 Suffolk lead. Nichols cut into the Suffolk with a goal of their own. Wiggett jumped out pf the box after serving a penalty and picked the pocket of the Ram defender. She then skated through the zone and fired a wrist shot that beat the net minder and hit the post to bounce into. This was her second goal of the season and made it a 2-1 lead with 4:02 remaining in the period.

With time expiring in the period, there was a scramble in front of Muir and the puck was knocked in with 13 seconds remaining on the clock, to give Suffolk their second two goal lead, 3-1.

Nichols came out in the third period and carried the play which led to Jaskova tying the game. Jaskova carried the puck through the zone and beat her defender and tucked the puck past a sprawling goalie for her fifth goal of the season and pulled Nichols within 1.

Nichols pulled the goalie for the extra attacker with around a minute or so to go in the game. They had a few opportunities, but Suffolk hung on to win 3-2 over the Bison.

Muir stopped 26 shots and the Bison penalty kill was perfect once again going 5-5 but the power-play struggled going 0-5 in the effort.

Nichols will get back on the ice tomorrow as they travel to Boston for take on the Rams once again. Puck drop is set for 5:40 p.m.
