WENHAM, Mass. (10/24/23) – In their 2023 regular season finale on Tuesday night, the Nichols College men's soccer program suffered a 2-0 loss to Gordon College at the Brigham Athletic Complex.
The loss moved the Bison to 7-7-3 (2-3-3 CCC) on the season, while Gordon climbed to 8-1-6 (4-1-3 CCC) overall. As a result of the outcome, the Bison currently occupy the No. 7 position in the CCC standings, while the Fighting Scots hold No. 3.
The Fighting Scots opened the scoring in the 35
th minute as Adrian Chiang drove in a cross pass from by Benji Wright, beating Bison goalkeeper
Franco Barreto Santana. Through the first 45-minutes of play, Gordon would outshoot the Bison by a 9-2 margin, and would carry the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
In the 61
st minute of the second half, Gordon would extend their lead to 2-0. Following an off-target pass by the Bison at center field, Gordon quickly turned the action around with another cross into a crowd of players, resulting in a shot from just outside the box by Noah Martin. The shot then took a funny bounce off the attempted save by Barreto Santana, producing a playable rebound for Benji Wright to clean up, bringing his point totals on the night to three. The score would continue on as a 2-0 final for the hosts.
The Fighting Scots completed the full 90-minutes outshooting the Bison 20-7 in total, with a 12-4 advantage with shots on goal. Gunnar Lucuk stopped all four shots he faced for Gordon, earning himself the shutout, while
Franco Barreto Santana stopped 10 in the effort for the Bison.
With both teams in the playoff picture, the opening round of the CCC Championship Tournament will take place on Saturday, October 28
th with No. 7 Nichols College at No. 2 Roger Williams University, with kickoff scheduled for noon.
