DUDLEY, Mass. (10/21/23) – 60 minutes was not enough for the Nichols College field hockey team in their non-conference battle with Western Connecticut State on a rainy Saturday afternoon from Vendetti Field. The Bison lost 3-2 in overtime to the Wolves.
Junior
Merle Steinau scored her first collegiate goal and classmate
Callie Worthington also scored in the effort for the Bison. Sophomore
Taylor Breen tallied an assist on the Worthington goal.
Western Connecticut opened the scoring in the second quarter after both teams went scoreless in the opening 15 minutes of action. Nichols responded 1:15 later to pull even at 1-1 thanks to Steinau. This goal was her first collegiate goal.
Once again, the Wolves broke the tie, making it 2-1 just over three minutes into the second half. Western Connecticut hung on to the one goal lead for the rest of the third quarter and most of the fourth as well. Worthington was able to pull the Bison even thanks to a pass from Breen that Worthington buried into the cage with 1:55 remaining the contest.
Both teams would need more then 60 minutes to decide a winner. It was the Wolves once again breaking the tie, this time for good as they scored 45 seconds into overtime on a partial breakaway to seal the 3-2 win.
Nichols will return to action on Monday when they travel to Gordon College for a non-conference match up with the Fighting Scots. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
