Women's Tennis CCC Finals Bound, Nichols 5 RWU 3

Dudley, Mass. (10/19/23). – 5 was the magic number for the Nichols Women's Tennis Team as they beat out the Roger Williams University Hawks in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Semi-Final matchup at the Robinson Tennis Courts on Thursday. The Bison utilized their home-court advantage and clinched the match with a 5-3 victory.

The Bison put themselves in a good position picking up 2 of the 3 possible points in doubles action. At number one doubles Antonia Carrero / Charis Vogler picked up an 8-2 victory for the home side. Sophia Leonardi / Johanna Schroeder were commanding at number three doubles winning 8-1 for the home side.

For the Bison to secure the playoff victory, they had to win 3 of the 6 singles matchups. Those wins would come in the form of the Carrero winning her match at number one (6-3, 6-2). The Bison then dropped the number 5 matchup, but Vogler picked up a win for the Bison at number three (6-4, 6-1). That combined with an additional loss at number six, would put the Bison ahead but a 4-3 margin.

Two of the singles matchups would need a deciding set to be determined. At number two, Johanna Schroeder and Alessia Cahoon were battling it out, and Nichols' Cora Brosch and the Hawk's Gracie McCarthy were dueling at number four.

In the end, it was Schroeder who was able to seal the deal for the Bison. Off a return from the Cahoon that was ruled out, Schroeder secured the win (6-0, 5-7, 6-4). Brosch looked promising in her match but in the end settled for an unfinished third set result (6-2, 6-4, 3-UF), due to Schroeder's 5th point clinching victory.

The Bison now head on the road for the CCC championship final. They will face the number one seeded Endicott Gulls, who beat the Gordon Fighting Scots 5-0 in the other seminal matchup. The match marks the second consecutive season the Gulls and Bison will clash for the CCC women's tennis crown. The championship match is set for Saturday, October 21st at 1pm in Beverly, Mass.
