Nichols Takes Home Boston Landing Collegiate Invitational Championship With Win Over SUNY Brockport

BOSTON, Mass. - The Nichols College men's hockey team won their second Boston Landing Collegiate Invitational title as they defeated SUNY Brockport on Sunday by the score of 5-2. Nichols swept the weekend, defeating Rivier on Saturday to earn their spot in the championship. With the win, Nichols improves to 6-7-0 on the season.

After a back and forth first period, SUNY Brockport opened the scoring 8:42 into the period with an unassisted, short-handed goal. The Golden Eagles penalty kill was strong the whole period, killing off three Nichols power-plays, while also adding the short-handed goal. The Bison tied things up with less than 10 seconds to go in the first, when Luke Harvie netted his second goal of the tournament. Forward Dylan McMahon was credited with the assist.

After an action packed first 12 minutes of the second period, SUNY Brockport re-took the lead 2-1. However, Nichols would respond in a big way just two minutes later. On the penalty kill, Kaiden Scott and Nathan Carl found themselves with a 2 on 1 break. Scott dished it off to Carl and he found the back of the net to tie the game up at 2. The goal was Carl's second of the tournament. The Bison kept the pressure on for the remainder of the period before Josh Dickson carried the puck into the zone and ripped a wrist shot past the goalie to give Nichols the 3-2 lead.

Four minutes into the third period, Nichols would find themselves on the penalty kill once again, and once again they would come away with a short-handed goal. The Carl and Scott duo continued their dominance on the PK as Carl snuck one past the goaltender, with the assist coming again from Scott, to make it 4-2. Three minutes later, Hunter Fraser added a goal of his own to seal the win, and the championship, for the Bison.

Netminder Mathias Backstrom finished with 24 saves, while also being named the tournament MVP. Kaiden Scott was named to the All-Tournament team as well.

The Bison return to the ice on Friday, January 13, when they take on conference foe Curry College at Levy Rink at 7 p.m.
