Women's Hockey Falls in Overtime vs Salve, 1-0

HARRISVILLE, R.I. – The Nichols women's hockey team dropped a tough game in overtime on Friday night against Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Opponent Salve Regina on Friday night by the score of 1-0. With the loss, the Bison fall to 4-13-1 (2-10-0 CCC), while the Seahawks of Salve improve to 8-11-0 (3-9-0 CCC)

Both teams were unable to sustain much pressure on offense in the first period, despite Nichols going on two power plays, and Salve having one of their own. Goaltender Victoria Bakopanos stopped 10 shots in the period, keeping the score tied up at zero.

The second period saw a few more chances for both sides, with each team finding themselves on the power play, but neither able to capitalize as the score remained 0-0 after 40 minutes of play.

The third period would remain scoreless as both teams were unable to convert on some great chances in front of the net. The game headed to the five-minute overtime period knotted at zero.

The Bison were able to get a huge penalty kill halfway through the period. However, with 24 seconds remaining Salve took the puck up the right side on a breakaway and snuck a wrist shot past Bakopanos to send the road team home with a win.

Bakopanos finished the game with 38 saves in total. The Bison penalty-kill was strong all day, killing off all five Seahawks power-plays.

Nichols looks to avenge the loss against Salve tomorrow night in Middletown, Rhode Island, with the puck set to drop at 7:30.
