DUDLEY, Mass. — The Nichols women's basketball team picked up a big win in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Tuesday night over Curry by the score of 100-92. With the win, Nichols improves to 5-12 (4-7 CCC) on the season, while Curry falls to 6-12 (2-9 CCC).
The Bison found themselves down early, trailing by five points after the first quarter. Nichols would bounce back in the second, outscoring the Colonels 30-16 on their way to a 45-36 halftime advantage. The Bison defense forced 10 turnovers in the quarter to help them take the lead heading into the break.
Curry would not go away quietly in the third quarter, as they went 17-20 from the line en route to tying things up at 70 apiece before the start of the fourth. The Bison were not as fortunate from the line, shooting just 50% on 8 attempts in the quarter.
After Curry grabbed the lead with a quick bucket at the start of the fourth, Nichols responded by going on a 9-1 run, capped off by a Kiera Fernandes three, to retake the lead 79-73. After back-and-forth play for the next five minutes, the Colonels found themselves within two with just over a minute remaining. Senior guard Leandra Ortiz would come up with the play of the game for the Bison, picking the pocket of a Curry ball handler and taking it the other way for the layup, plus the foul. Ortiz nailed the free throw to put the game out of reach and give the Bison their fifth win of the season.
Ortiz finished the game with a season-high 20 points, while also adding 6 assists. Abrianna Vazquez was the leading scorer for the Bison with 28 points, going 8-9 from the foul line. Fernandez chipped in with 26 points of her own.
Nichols is back in action on Thursday when they take on Maine-Fort Kent at 6Â p.m. at the Nichols Athletic Center.
