Field Hockey Falls to Pioneers in Caryl Newhof Classic Final

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Nichols College field hockey program fell to the Smith College Pioneers 6-0 Sunday afternoon in the final of the Caryl Newhof Classic at Smith.

The Pioneers (2-1) wasted no time in the contest, getting themselves on the board within the first two minutes of the first quarter. They would score once more before the end of the quarter, before scoring one in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth. The Pioneers also led in shots (41-11) and penalty corners (12-3).

Bison (2-1) senior goalkeeper Megan Fuchs posted 17 saves in the contest, a career-high. Following the game, freshmen Taylor Breen and Kaelyn Casper were named to the Caryl Newhof Classic All-Tournament Team for their performance in the tournament. Breen recorded her first career hat trick in the first round against the University of Maine-Farmington, while Casper scored two goals in the same game. 

Nichols looks to rebound on Wednesday, September 7th, on the road against Anna Maria in Paxton, Mass. at 6:00 p.m.
