HARRISVILLE, R.I. – It took until the 19:38 mark of the third period for the first goal of the game, but it was well worth the wait for the Nichols women's hockey team as
Grace Wiggett fired a wrist shot past Curry's Soleil Archambeault to lift the Bison over the Colonels, 1-0, on Friday night at Levy Rink.
Curry dominated the possession and pace of play in the opening period and held a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal at the first intermission. Nichols came out of the dressing room with a spark and poured on 14 shots while netminder
Victoria Bakopanos turned aside all five Curry shots faced in the second period to keep zeros posted on the scoreboard.
In the third period, Curry went on the powerplay three times, but could only muster one shot on net due to the tenacious penalty kill of the Bison units.
With time running out and overtime seeming like the reality, junior
Grace Wiggett had other plans. The center hailing out of Essex Junction, Vt. picked up a loose puck in the right faceoff circle and ripped a shot far side and past Archambeault to serve as the Bison hero, giving Nichols its first CCC win of the season to advance to 2-7-1 (1-6-0 CCC).
Bakopanos' 26 save shutout marked her first clean sheet of the season, and the first for the Bison.
Nichols will wrap up its first semester action on Saturday, December 10 in a road matchup with Worcester State at 5:30 p.m. at the Worcester Ice Center.
