DUDLEY, Mass. – Riding high following a 5-0 first-round victory over Gordon, the No. 3 seeded Nichols women's tennis team is headed to Bristol, R.I. for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Semifinals showdown with No. 3 Roger Williams on Thursday, October 20, with first serve set for 3 p.m. from the RWU Tennis Courts. The meeting will be a rematch of last season's CCC Semifinals, in which the Bison were upset by the Hawks, 5-4.
In the quarterfinal matchup with Gordon, Nichols raced out to a 3-0 lead following doubles play. Needing just two points to secure the victory,
Charis Vogler handedly put away her opponent, 6-0, 6-2, before
Johanna Schroeder wrapped things up with a straight sweep of her Fighting Scot counterpart on court four.
Roger Williams enters today's match following a first-round bye, as the second seeded Hawks finished 12-1 (6-1 CCC), just one conference win shy of the regular-season champion, Endicott.
Earlier this season, both teams squared off in a regular-season contest in Bristol, which ultimately came down to No. 1 singles determining the winner in a 5-4 affair. The Hawks' Emma Place squeaked by
Antonia Carrero, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, to boost the Hawks to their sixth-straight victory at that time.
Place and Carrero are set to face off yet again this afternoon in highly anticipated No. 1 singles and doubles battles.
The winner of Thursday's match will face-off on Saturday against the winner of No. 4 Salve Regina and No. 1 Endicott at a time and location to be determined.
