DUDLEY, Mass. - The Nichols field hockey program fell to Clark University in a shootout Tuesday night, 3-2, at Vendetti Field.
Nichols (5-8) got on the board first when freshman
Taylor Breen netted her team-leading eighth goal of the season, sending a feed by graduate student
Dana Edwards through the Clark (6-7) goalie's legs.
Clark was able to find the back of the net with just over two minutes remaining in the second quarter, before opening the third quarter with their second goal to take the lead.
The Bison were able to force a corner call with 34 seconds remaining in the second half. Senior
Erin Anthony inserted the ball to freshman
Merle Steinau, who was able to find graduate student
Sam Ahaesy in front of the goal for a tip to tie the match.
The two teams played out the two overtimes frames with the Cougars holding the edge in shots, 6-1, and corners, 2-1.
In the shootout, Clark's Alison Kopec and Sydney Lamothe were the heros, scoring the two points needed to back up netminder Loren Root for the win.
Bison sophomore netminder
Sophia Venable recorded 16 saves on the night, her second-highest mark of the season.
Nichols looks to bounce back Saturday, October 15, on the road at Salve Regina at 12:00 p.m. at Gaudet Field in Middletown, R.I.
