Two grand slams highlight 20-11 win over Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – Junior DJ Caron and freshman Victor Valentin each belted a grand slam for the Nichols College baseball team in a 20-11 win at Gordon College Wednesday afternoon at J. Tech White Field.

Valentin finished 4-for-6 with five RBI and three runs scored while Caron also knocked in five and scored twice. The Bison pounded out 18 hits and struck for 12 of their 18 runs in the fifth inning.

Freshman Ben Jerome drove in three runs and recorded three hits out of the leadoff spot for the Bison (5-8) while graduate student Kyle Bouchard collected two more hits as he inches closer to the program record; he has 188 for his career, 22 off the record held by former teammate Cam Cook.

Nichols trailed 5-0 after one inning of play and found itself behind 7-3 heading into the fifth before the bats exploded. Caron's round tripper tied the game at seven before three bases-loaded walks and a two-run single by Jerome helped stake the Bison to a 15-7 lead. Valentin's bomb in the eighth sparked a five-run outburst and extended the lead to 19-8.

Six student-athletes took the mound for head coach Tim Mayo; freshman Conner Raff struck out four in two scoreless innings to record his first collegiate win.
