Recap
Junior
Elijah Lewis netted a team-high 17 points and graduate student
Jerome Cunningham picked up a double-double 14 points and 13 boards as the Nichols College men's basketball team worked overtime to earn a 67-62 win over Western New England University Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Athletic Center.
Senior
Matt Morrow chipped in with 13 points and seven rebounds as the Bison (2-2) ran their win streak to seven against the Golden Bears. Freshman
Matt Lasalandra filled the stat sheet with 10 points, three steals, and two rebounds in his first collegiate start for Nichols.
"These wins over Western New England were gutty," said Nichols head coach
Brandon Linton. "We talked before the game about how the second one is the harder one to get because everyone is tired and achy, so the fact that they were able to do it with defense and grind it out was fun to see."
Senior Alex Skiroski led all student-athletes with 28 points (10-of-22 FG) while junior Antonio Brancato registered 17 points and five assists for the Golden Bears (0-2). Junior Kenny Flynn, meanwhile, pulled down 15 rebounds.
Nichols shot 37 percent from the field and struggled from behind the arc, knocking down just three of its 20 attempts. The Bison did record 40 points in the paint and pulled even with the Golden Bears on the glass at 49. They also held them to 31 percent shooting while forcing 14 turnovers.
"We spent a lot of time this week focusing on defensive principles and the overall effort we need on that end," explained Linton. "Guys worked Monday through Thursday and put in a heck of an effort yesterday. Today, they came up with an even better effort."
