Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Bison answer the bell and stun Rams

Recap
Freshman Abrianna Vazquez poured in a game-high 27 points to propel the Nichols College women's basketball team to a 69-56 win over Suffolk University Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Athletic Center.

Less than 24-hours after a demoralizing 55-point loss to the Rams (1-1) on Friday night in Boston, the Bison (1-1) held the Rams to 31 percent shooting and forced 16 turnovers. Senior Shannon St. Lawrence controlled the glass all afternoon as she pulled down 18 boards – the sixth-highest single game total in program history – while freshman Summer Klein netted 14 points and sophomore Leandra Ortiz chipped in with 12.

"We watched some of the film from last night's game this morning and made some adjustments," said Nichols head coach MaryLynn Skarzenski. "The kids really bought in. We had to dig down on defense and it was the difference today. We were flat yesterday and gave up too many wide-open shots. Today, we contested shots more and our defense fueled out offense. When you're getting stops on defense, you're not pressured to get a bucket. They were able to relax and score."

Vasquez, meanwhile, knocked down eight of her 14 field goal attempts – including five triples – in 34 minutes of action. "Abrianna is awesome. We have a great group of seven that work together and Abrianna can fuel us," explained Skarzenski. "She's a point guard and our floor general, and she got going. Her energy level is contagious and she made some big shots today."

Senior Gabriella DeComa paced Suffolk with 13 points and eight boards while classmate Jenna-Rose DiCecco racked up 13 points, nine rebounds, and seven dimes.
