Jaekwon Spencer recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds in a 92-79 win over the University of New England Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball action at the Nichols Athletic Center.
Senior
DeAnte Bruton led all student-athletes with 26 points to go with four boards, three steals, and a pair of assists. Junior
Matt Morrow also picked up a double-double as he went for 19 points and 15 rebounds in 32 minutes while sophomore
Jason O'Regan knocked down a pair of triples and finished with 11 points.
Freshman Siddiq Canty paced the Nor'easters (11-9, 5-6 CCC) with 18 points – 13 of which came in the second half – while junior Alex Kravchuk netted 13 points and sophomore Ray Evans came off the bench to score 11 points. UNE shot 42 percent from the field and made just 9-of-17 from the charity stripe.
Nichols (12-8, 7-4 CCC) led by 11 at the half (51-39) behind 20 from Bruton and nine from Morrow. Evans and junior Jordan Bagshaw each scored eight for the Nor'easters. Spencer and Morrow combined for 20 points and 12 boards in the second half. UNE climbed to within eight points three times in the closing minutes before a triple from Spencer at the top of the key essentially ended the game.
Three things you need to know...
-Today's contest marked the 31st all-time meeting between Nichols College and the University of New England. The Bison have won the last five meetings and lead the all-time series, 26-5.
-Nichols scored 56 of its 92 points in the paint and overcame 18 turnovers to secure the win.
-The Bison led for all but 30 seconds of the contest and by as many as 19 points in the second half.
