Jaekwon Spencer led four Nichols College student-athletes in double figures with a career-high 26 points in a 93-79 win over Salve Regina University Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball action at the Nichols Athletic Center.
Junior
Matt Morrow added 22 points and nine boards for the Bison (13-8, 8-4 CCC) while senior
DeAnte Bruton dropped in 13 points to go with seven dimes. Junior
Nate Tenaglia netted 12 points (4-of-6 3-pointers) while both senior
Kash Jackson and sophomore
Jason O'Regan chipped in with nine points apiece.
The Bison raced out to a 16-2 lead but trailed by one at the half (43-42) as Spencer led all student-athletes with 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting while both Tenaglia and Bruton knocked down a pair of triples. Morrow opened the second half by sinking a pair of free throws that gave the Bison – who led by as many as 23 late in the second half – the lead for good.
Nichols finished the contest shooting 51 percent from the field (34-of-67) and held a 37-34 edge on the glass. The Bison also forced 20 turnovers which led to 25 points. Junior Kevin Kelley and sophomore Andrew Richards each scored 17 points for the Seahawks (8-13, 4-8 CCC).
Junior Cameron Collins – who scored 26 points in a 76-70 win over Nichols two weeks ago – collected 15 points (7-of-15 FG).
Three things you need to know...
-Today's contest marked the 56th all-time meeting between Salve Regina University and Nichols College. The Bison have won 13 of the last 14 matchups and lead the series, 30-26 NC.
-Spencer's previous career-high of 22 points came against New England College on November 16.
-Morrow – who entered the game shooting 45 percent from the charity stripe – was a perfect 6-of-6 on the afternoon.
