Beacons down Bison at Warrior Ice Arena

The Nichols College women's hockey team lost to UMass-Boston 5-2 Friday evening in non-conference action at the Warrior Ice Arena in Boston, Massachusetts.

The Beacons (8-6-1) got on the board first with a power-play goal from Elie Fallieras, her first of the season at the 4:43 mark in the first period. The power-play goal came after a checking penalty from freshman Lauren Rokala. The Beacons were forced to go down to 5-3 with two penalties from Grace Fisher and Jane Ann Drill midway through the first period. Nichols capitalized on the 5-3 with a goal from junior McKenna Gernander, her first of the season with help from classmate Mel McAleer.

The Bison (2-8-2) had a great chance to gain the lead when McAleer had a breakaway and beamed one of the pipe at the 18:12 mark in the second period, before UMass-Boston regained the one goal lead in the with a goal from Kelsey Ryan, unassisted after she collected her own rebound off a save from freshman Julia Carroll. The Beacons made it 3-1 after Ryan notched her second goal of the game, another unassisted goal, at the 4:08 mark in the third frame.

The Beacons added two more goals from Mia Sacco and Erica Lunn late in the third period to pull away with the four-goal victory. Nichols added a late goal from junior Jordyn McGuire before taking the 5-1 defeat.
 
Three things you need to know…
-The Bison outshot the Beacons 39-25.
-Beacons goalie Caty Flagg turned aside 37 shots in the victory.
-Tonight's game marked the 11th all-time meeting between the two programs.
