Bison hold off Mariners in opener

Recap
Senior Megan Gardner notched 12 kills and sophomore Jayleen Fegan collected 24 digs in Nichols College's 3-2 win over Mitchell College Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's volleyball action at the Nichols Athletic Center.

Graduate student Zoe Chevrette handed out 26 assists to go with eight digs as the Bison (1-1) rebounded from a 3-0 loss earlier in the day to the Warriors to even their record after one day of competition.

Nichols opened up a 2-0 lead in the match behind six kills from Gardner and five from freshman Chardae Saunders. The Bison posted a .375 hitting pct. in the second set – which they won 25-13 – as freshman Allyson Tuxbury threw down three kills.

The Mariners rallied to win games three (25-22) and four (25-17) to force a fifth and deciding set for just the third time in the four-year history of the NC program. Gardner notched three kills in the frame while Regan has a pair to lift the home team to a 15-11 triumph. Senior Lexxus Andrews came off the bench and sparked the Bison with a pair of service aces.
