Bison ground Seahawks, advance to winners bracket

Recap
The Nichols College baseball team defeated Salve Regina 9-1 in the first round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament Thursday afternoon at Reynolds Field in Newport, Rhode Island.

The Bison (21-18, 6-8 CCC) were powered by three home runs and three RBI singles. Senior Joe Assenza went 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, while graduate student Chris Anderson went 1-for-4 with one run and three RBI after hitting the first home run of the day to start the offense for the Bison. Freshman Tyler Heenan had a career day, going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, including a home run.
Sophomore Robert Cobb quieted the strong Salve (21-15, 8-6 CCC) offense, holding the Seahawks to just one hit over eight lights out innings. Junior Brodie Altiere finished out the game for the Bison, allowing one run on two hits through one inning.

The Bison got six runs on seven hits through six innings off of Seahawks sophomore starter Michael Viveiros. Salve's relievers, junior Zach Dionne and sophomore Dean Borders, combined for three runs on five hits and two walks through the final three innings.

Three things you need to know…
-Cobb extended his scoreless streak to 23.1 innings, dating back to April 19th against Wentworth.
-The Bison's three home runs today, push them to 24 total on the season which is now the most they have hit in a single season in program history. The previous record was 22 home runs from the 1980 season.
-Three current Bison players have placed themselves on the Nichols all-time hit list. Junior Kyle Bouchard's 152 career hits places him 7th all time, Assenza's 151 hits places him 8th all time, and junior Christian Naccari's 127 hits places him 15th all time.

Quote
"It was great to see our guys play loose and pressure free. Robbie Cobb was the best he has been all year on the mound and the guys rallied behind him. We played well defensively, on the mound, and at the plate. Our senior leadership is strong and they are not going to go out quietly. We are looking forward to tomorrows battle." -Nichols first year head coach Tim Mayo
