The Nichols College women's ice hockey team defeated Stevenson University 3-1 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Levy Rink in Harrisville, Rhode Island.
The Bison (9-6-3) bounced back quickly after their loss last night with back-to-back goals in the first period. The first goal came from sophomore
Nicole Cowan at the 14:43 mark in the first period. Freshman
Abby Lueken and junior
Emily Eagan both picked up assists on the goal. Less than a minute later, sophomore
Mel McAleer potted her eighth goal of the season with a helper from senior
Kelly Ferreira, her eighth.
The Mustangs (6-10-1) responded in the second period with an unassisted power-play goal from senior Kellen Wittman, her 14th of the season. Seven minutes later, Nichols freshman
Isabella Portt padded the lead with a goal of her own with the help of McAleer and Ferreira. The Mustangs pulled junior goalie Annie Smyth-Hammond with 1:46 remaining in the third period but the Bison defense was too strong.

Three things you need to know…
-Despite the loss, Stevenson outshot the Bison 31-26.
-Freshman goalie
Stephanie Runciman turned aside 30 shots as she picked up her second win of the season, improving to 2-0-0.
-This was the program's second win over Stevenson in seven tries.
