Nichols splits CCC opener at Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – The Nichols College softball team split its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader with Gordon College Saturday afternoon at the Gordon Softball Field.

Game One: Nichols 3, Gordon 2 (8 innings)
Back-to-back doubles from sophomore Erin Kelley and freshman Jessica Soucie to open the third staked the Bison (6-6, 1-1 CCC) to a 1-0 lead. After the Fighting Scots pushed across a run in the sixth to tie the game at one, senior Courtney Manarky singled home Kelley in the seventh to give the Bison a 2-1 lead.

Gordon (6-13, 2-4 CCC) answered back with a run in its half of the frame to send the game to extras, where NC senior Kendall Meehan doubled home freshman Colleen Callahan in the eighth for the winning run. Kelley finished with two runs scored.

Sophomore Alexis Ferris fanned 10 in eight innings of work to earn the win. She surrendered eight hits and two runs (one earned) with four walks to improve to 4-3 on the season.

Game Two: Gordon 3, Nichols 2
Meehan opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning. Sophomore Cara Mayhew doubled home junior Callie Andrews in the third to double the lead before the Fighting Scots tied the game with runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Then, in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Caitlin Catalanotto plated junior Megan Jenkerson with a sac fly to right to win the game for Gordon.

Freshman Shannon Morin tossed 6.2 innings for the Bison, allowing five hits and three runs with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.
