BIDDEFORD, Maine – The Nichols College softball team split its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader with the University of New England Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Softball Field.
Game One: Nichols 3, UNE 2
Senior
Kendall Meehan and sophomore
Cara Mayhew each went 3-for-4 and junior
Jessica Kuelling drove in the game-winning run in the eighth to help the Bison win the opener.
Junior
Callie Andrews opened the fourth with a triple and scored on a single by Meehan to give the Bison a 1-0 lead. Meehan later scored on a groundout by Kuelling to double the lead.
The Nor'easters pushed across single runs in the fifth and seventh to send the game to extras, when Meehan brought in freshman
Colleen Callahan with an infield single.
Sophomore
Alexis Ferris picked up her eighth win of the season for Nichols, allowing 10 hits and two runs in eight innings of work. She walked two and struck out five.
Game Two: UNE 9, Nichols 2
The Bison (10-11-1, 4-5-1 CCC) opened up a 2-0 lead behind RBI hits from Callahan and sophomore
Taylor McIntosh before the Nor'easters scored nine unanswered runs. McIntosh and Andrews each collected three hits in the loss.
Freshman
Shannon Morin was tagged for 11 hits and six runs in five innings of work for the Bison.
All-Time Series
Today's games marked the 41st and 42nd all-time meetings between Nichols College and the University of New England. With today's split, the Bison now trail the series, 25-18.
