DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols College softball team swept its non-conference doubleheader from Elms College Thursday afternoon at the Nichols Softball Field.
Game One: Nichols 3, Elms 2
Freshman
Jessica Soucie went 2-for-2 with an RBI and junior
Callie Andrews added a pair of hits as the Bison scored twice in the seventh to win the opener.
Freshman
Colleen Callahan opened the bottom of the first with a single and came around to score on a single by sophomore
Cara Mayhew. Sophomore Katelyn Sylvia doubled in the second to give the Blazers a 2-1 lead, which held until the seventh when Soucie singled to score sophomore
Taylor Commesso and tie the game. Senior
Courtney Manarky then reached on a passed ball third strike, which allowed Mayhew to score the winning run from third.
Sophomore
Alexis Ferris picked up her sixth win of the season for Nichols, allowing nine hits and two runs (one earned) with three walks and nine strikeouts in seven innings. Junior Lisa Lusardi took the loss as she surrendered three runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks and seven K's.
Game Two: Nichols 4, Elms 3
Freshman
Carlee Tolley went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Callahan plated a pair to help the Bison complete the doubleheader sweep.
After Elms senior Elizabeth Olszewski belted a two-run home run in the first, Commesso singled to bring in the first Bison run in the bottom of the frame. In the second, Tolley had a bunt single to score Andrews and tie the game at two. Callahan then doubled in the fourth to plate a pair and give Nichols a 4-2 lead. Lisardi brought the Blazers to within one with an RBI single in the fifth and, with the Bison leading 4-3 after the top of the fifth, the game was called due to darkness.
Freshman
Shannon Morin moved to 3-4 on the season with the win, allowing five hits and three runs (one earned) with three walks and four strikeouts. Junior Raeanna Tumel took the loss, giving up eight hits and four runs (two earned) over four innings.
All-Time Series
Today's games marked the 25th and 26th all-time meeting between Nichols College and Elms College and the first since 2012. The Bison now lead the series, 25-1.
