Golden Bears rally past Bison, 10-9

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior MacKenzie Martin scored three goals in Nichols College's 10-9 loss to Western New England University Tuesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse action at Golden Bear Stadium.
 
Graduate student Reece O'Connor chipped in with three points as the Bison (9-4, 2-3 CCC) were 27 seconds away from snapping a 24-game losing streak to the Golden Bears, who scored three times in the closing minute to secure the win.
 
Senior Mikey Wood scored a game-high four goals for the Golden Bears while sophomores Brendan Lyons and Oskar Djusberg each scored three times. Nicholas Beauchamp dished out three assists and also scored once.
 
 The two schools were tied at three after one quarter as Martin, O'Connor, and junior Jack Campanale struck for the Bison. Goals from freshman Brendan Coates and junior Brayden Carroll in the second gave the Bison a 5-3 halftime lead despite being outshot 20-16.
 
The Golden Bears trimmed their deficit to 6-5 entering the fourth before the Bison opened the fourth with three-straight goals from Martin (11:51), J. Campanale (8:01), and O'Connor (5:57), extending their lead to 9-5. WNE closed the game by scoring the final five goals, the last of which came off the stick of Wood with six seconds remaining.
 
Western New England outshot the Bison 49-25 and was a perfect 17-of-17 on clearing attempts. Junior Brian McKinley stopped 17 shots for Nichols and also led it in ground balls with five. Sophomore Hugh O'Donnell led field players with three.
 
All-Time Series
This evening's contest marked the 28th all-time meeting between Western New England University and Nichols College. The Golden Bears have won the last 24 meetings and now lead the series, 24-4.
