Nichols powers past Emerson, 12-4

DUDLEY, Mass. – Nine different players recorded at least one points as the Nichols College men's lacrosse team improved to 6-1 overall with a 12-4 victory over Emerson College on Monday night in Dudley, Mass.
 
Junior Brayden Carroll netted four goals, while senior MacKenzie Martin added three points on a pair of goals and an assist to fuel the Bison attack. Freshman Brendan Coates also scored twice, while junior Jack Campanale posted a goal and an assist. Junior Casey Campanale also had a multi-point day with a goal and two assists.
 
Senior Brett Stuhr and freshman Thomas Astle added a goal apiece, while graduate student Reece O'Connor and sophomore Hugh O'Donnell each registered an assist.
 
Defensively, Brian McKinley earned his sixth win of the season while making 13 saves and grabbing four groundballs with a caused turnover. Junior Matt O'Connell also scooped up four groundballs and caused a pair of turnovers, with classmate Trevor Young picking up three groundballs and causing three turnovers.
 
Emerson (3-2) was led by a pair of goals from freshman Stevie Powers, while junior Cameron Radenberg had a goal and an assist. Junior Bailey Kennedy suffered the setback for the Lions while making 11 saves and grabbing three groundballs. Sophomore Austin DiPietro grabbed a game-high eight groundballs in the defeat.
 
The Bison held a 37-28 advantage in shots in the game, while the Lions grabbed 37 groundballs compared to 28 for the home team. Emerson struggled with turnovers, however, committing 25 missteps to just 15 for Nichols. The Bison were effective on clears, going 15-for-19, while Emerson ended the night just 11-for-18 on clear attempts.
 
Coates opened the scoring with 7:22 to play in the opening quarter, and Emerson responded in the closing minute as junior Jared Brush converted a pass from Radenberg to knot the game at 1-1 with 48 seconds remaining. Nichols wasted no time with an answer of its own as O'Donnell came down on the fast break and flipped a pass to Martin who fired a shot past the keeper to put the Bison in front 2-1 only 18 seconds later.
 
Nichols controlled play in the second quarter as they scored four goals while allowing only one to take a 6-2 lead into halftime. Carroll would score twice in the period, while Casey Campanale and Brett Stuhr would also find the back of the net.
 
Emerson scored the opening goal of the second half as Radenberg cut the deficit in half, 6-3, with 10:35 to play. The Bison had the answer again, scoring the final three goals of the frame to take a 9-3 advantage into the fourth quarter. Coates and Martin each scored a goal, while Carroll made it a hat-trick with a goal on the man advantage in the final minute.
 
Carroll put the game away early in the fourth as his fourth goal of the day put Nichols in front, 10-3. Powers would score for the Lions with 8:05 remaining, but Astle and Jack Campanale would score the final two goals of the game to give the Bison the 12-4 victory.
