Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Nichols downs No. 5 UNE, 4-3

Recap
Freshman Curtis Carlson scored twice in Nichols College's 4-3 win over No. 5 UNE Friday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's ice hockey action at Levy Rink.

Senior captain Matthew Menta added two assists for the Bison (6-3-0, 6-1-0 CCC), who knocked off their first ranked opponent of the season in a rematch of last season's conference championship. NC outshot the Nor'easters (7-2-0, 5-2-0 CCC) by a 33-24 margin and went 1-for-5 with the man advantage.

Seniors Tucker Ross and Dylan Bengtson, along with freshman Aaron Aragon, each scored for UNE. Sophomore netminder Ben Churchfield turned aside 29 shots in just his second loss of the season.

Senior Ben Campbell's wrister from the high slot eluded Churchfield in the first and tied the game at one at 5:24. Carlson's first of the night just over three minutes later gave the Bison a short-lived 2-1 lead. In the second, Carlson carried the puck down the right wing boards, through the neutral zone and into the UNE end, and got off a shot from a sharp-angle that snuck past Churchfield and made it 3-2. Junior Nicholas Mangone potted the eventual GWG on a breakaway midway through the third as his backhand snuck through the legs of the sophomore goalie.

Three things you need to know...
-Tonight's contest marked the seventh all-time meeting between Nichols College and the University of New England, and the fourth at Levy Rink. The series is now even at 3-3-1 and the Bison are 2-1-1 in Harrisville.
-Nichols is now 6-19-0 all-time against nationally ranked opponents, but 4-4-0 since the start of last season.
-Junior Vincent Crivello assisted on Carlson's second tally and leads the Bison with 12 assists.

Quote
"I thought we did a good job coming together tonight. We had four lines and seven D who all played well. Tonight was a team win – not one individual won this hockey game for us. Everyone buckled down and got the job done." –Nichols head coach Parker Burgess
