Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Bison open season with win over Leopards

Recap
Freshmen Curtis Carlson, Petr Miko, and Justin Perron each potted their first collegiate goal in Nichols College's 5-2 win over Wentworth in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's ice hockey action Friday night at Levy Rink.

Junior J.B. Baker added a goal and an assist for the Bison (1-0-0, 1-0-0 CCC), who are 4-0-1 in their last five meetings with the Leopards and 11-2-1 over the last 14 matchups. Senior Adam Lane collected a goal and an assist for the Leopards, who outshot the Bison 24-14 over the final 40 minutes of the contest.

Baker staked the Bison to a 1-0 lead just 2:09 into the contest when he stole the puck from a WIT defender and beat freshman netminder Thomas Draper. Carlson's shorthanded marker at 14:34 doubled the lead heading into the first intermission before goals from Perron and senior captain Matthew Menta just 2:49 apart in the second made it 4-0. Miko's tap-in at the left post off a feed from senior Ben Campbell extended the lead to 5-0 at 7:30 of the second.

Three things you need to know...
-Sophomore Henry Burns carried a shutout into the third period and finished the night with 31 saves for Nichols. Draper allowed five goals on 35 shots for the Leopards (0-2-1, 0-1-0 CCC).
-Eight different student-athletes recorded at least one point for the Bison, including junior Vincent Crivello and freshman Lucas Andersson; the assist on Menta's goal was the first of Andersson's career.
-Tonight's contest marked the 42nd all-time meeting between Nichols and Wentworth. The Bison now lead the series, 22-18-2.

Quote
"I thought we were excellent for forty minutes tonight. The effort was good all-around and our freshmen made some pretty good strides. It's great to be 1-0 after tonight, but the true measure is if we can put it together for an entire weekend." –Nichols head coach Parker Burgess
