Bison take Raiders in non-conference action

Recap
Freshman Madison Clark scored a pair of goals as the Nichols College women's soccer program defeated Rivier 3-1 Monday night at Vendetti Field in non-conference action in Dudley, Massachusetts.

Clark opened up the scoring early in the third minute for the Bison (3-6-1). She broke free from a defender and made her way up the right side of the field before striking a ball past the Rivier goaltender. The rest of the first half was a defensive effort as the Bison went into halftime up 1-0.

Right out of the half, the Raiders (2-6-0) struck back with a goal from sophomore Madison Wescott to tie the game at one. Twenty minutes later, the Bison were awarded a free-kick from about 20 yards out. Senior Kaylin Goncalves passed the ball to Clark, who chipped it up and over the Raiders defense and into the right side of the goal to put the Bison up 2-1.

In the 76th minute, sophomore Melody Millett ran past past two defenders on a breakaway towards the net. Rivier junior goalie Kasey Smith got to the ball first and kicked it up, but it deflected off Millett's body and into the net to give the Bison a two-goal lead.

Three things you need to know…
-This was Clark's first collegiate multi-goal game.
-With tonight's win, senior goaltender Brooke Downey moved into a tie with Sarah Levesque '08 with 12 career wins, which is No. 3 in program history.
            - Millett led the way with three shots in the match.

Quote

"Tonight was a great team victory. It would have been easy to let the momentum swing when Rivier came back to tie it early in the second half, but we did not let that happen. We took back control of the match and immediately put them under pressure. We had some great, hard fought individual efforts that led to our goals tonight, but these efforts would not have been possible if we had not decided to play together. This was a decision our student-athletes needed to make together. They needed to come together and play for one another. We got the win and are excited about our next match on Wednesday!" -Nichols head coach Karen Gurnon
