DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols College women's tennis team finished third at the 2017 Grass Court Doubles Championships hosted by Salve Regina University and held at the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, R.I. on Friday.

Assumption College women's tennis won all three flight finals to total 18 points and capture the 2017 Grass Court Doubles Championships, while Colby-Sawyer finished second with 10 points. Teams competed in three flights of doubles with champions and runners-up crowned in main draw competition; all matches were eight-game pro-sets.

In Flight A, the sophomore duo of Isabelle Leonardi (North Hampton, N.H.) and Amarie Settiwongse (Bangkok, Thailand) earned an 8-3 win over Johnson & Wales sophomore Nina Cohen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and junior Delaney Macchirole (Greenport, N.Y.). Unfortunately, in their second match of the day, Leonardi and Settiwongse ran into the Colby-Sawyer twosome of senior Ashley Woodside (Hampden, Maine) and freshman Yashu Yang (Kunming City, China), who defeated the Nichols tandem, 8-2.

In Flight B, senior Ashley Dallaire (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and sophomore Megan Nathanson (Scarborough, Maine) fell to Mount Holyoke junior Madison Rosen (Portland, Ore.) and senior Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India), 8-6. Dallaire and Nathanson rebounded in their second match of the day, rallying to defeat Johnson and Wales sophomores Holly Olson (Mukwonago, Wis.) and Madison Hernandez (Phoenix, Ariz.), 9-7.

The Nichols combo of freshman Juliana Herrera (Villavicencio, Columbia) and sophomore Rachel McDonald (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) picked up wins in their first two matches of the day in Flight C with an 8-2 win over the University of St. Joseph sophomore Domonique Carnot (Meriden, Conn.) and freshman Emily McAllister (Bristol, Conn.), followed by an 8-1 win over Salve Regina sophomores Shealyn FitzPatrick (South Windsor, Conn.) and Cate McGee (Warren, R.I.).

In the Flight C Championship match, sophomore Lindsey Kaplan (Boca Raton, Fla.) stepped in for McDonald to play with Herrera, but they came up just short, falling to Assumption junior Paige Benoit (Holden, Mass.) and sophomore Camille Latoni (San Juan, P.R.), 8-5.

Quotes
