MILTON, Mass. – Nichols College women's soccer junior goalie
Brooke Downey (Middleboro, Mass.) made 12 saves, while senior forward
Taylor Souza (New Bedford, Mass.) scored the game-tying goal to earn a 1-1 draw with Curry College on Saturday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Saturday night.
Four of Downey's game-high 12 saves came in the two overtime periods, including a game-saving stop in the final minute of action.
Curry opened the scoring in the first half as senior Korinna Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass.) scored off a feed from freshman Tayla Randall (Walpole, Mass.) to put the Colonels on top 1-0 in the 11th minute.
The home team would hold that lead headed into halftime, but Souza would knot the game at 1-1 less than 10 minutes into the second half as she scored off an assist from senior
Lauren MacGray (Norton, Mass.). The Bison put five shots on goal in the rest of the period, but Curry's sophomore keeper Haley Rice (Lexington, Mass.) kept Nichols off the board leading to overtime.
In the first extra period, each side attempted one shot, with Downey making a save on the only shot she faced. In the second overtime, Souza was awarded a penalty kick only 2:19 into the frame, but Rice turned her away to keep the tie alive. Nichols sophomore
Kaylin Goncalves (Norwood, Mass.) had a chance for the game-winner in the 108th minute, and this time Abigail Ford (Halifax, Mass.) was there to keep the ball out for Curry.
Curry held a slight 18-16 edge in shots in the game, while the Bison attempted eight corner kicks to just two for the Colonels. Curry's Rice earned the tie, making 10 saves on the night.
