Bison eliminated in NCAA Second Round by No. 6 Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. –
The Nichols College women's tennis team fell 5-0 to No. 6 Tufts University in the NCAA Second Round Saturday morning at the Tufts Tennis Courts.
 
The loss comes the day after the Bison became the first women's program in school history to win a NCAA Tournament match when they defeated Ithaca on Friday, 5-3.
 
The Bison put up a fight but the Jumbos swept through the doubles matches. The No. 2 doubles match finished first with sophomores Otilia Popa (San Diego, Calif.) and Tomo Iwasaki (Scarsdale, N.Y.) taking down junior Alanna Judd (Westborough, Mass.) and freshman Isabelle Leonardi (North Hampton, N.H.), 8-2.
 
The Jumbos then took the No. 3 doubles match 8-4 as seniors Alexa Meltzer (New York, N.Y.) and Jacqueline Baum (Highland Park, Ill.) knocked off senior Cristina Szepanski (Windsor Locks, Conn.) and freshman Lindsey Kaplan (Boca Raton, Fla.).
 
Freshman Amarie Settiwongse (Bangkok, Thailand) and junior Ashley Dallaire (East Bridgewater, Mass.) went down to the wire with freshman Katherine Wiley (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) and junior Lauren Louks (Malibu, Calif.) in the top flight but it was the Jumbos coming away with an 8-6 win.
 
The Jumbos had no trouble on the singles side as they quickly took the No. 2 singles match. Iwasaki defeated freshman Megan Nathanson (Scarborough, Maine), 6-0, 6-0.
 
The match concluded with senior Conner Calabro (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) defeating Leonardi at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
 
The Bison trailed in each of the remaining matches. At No. 3 singles Saldarriaga trailed Wiley 1-6, 0-3 while Kaplan was a game away from a loss to Popa at No. 5 singles 1-6, 1-5.
 
Szepanski was down in the second set at No. 6 singles to Baum, 1-6, 0-3. Settiwongse was having a battle with Louks – who is ranked 12th in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) – at No. 1 singles, as she trailed just 4-5 before the overall match was decided.
 
All-Time Series
This marked the first time these two schools have played each other with the Jumbos now leading the all-time series at, 1-0.
