Samantha DiReda (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season for the Nichols College women's ice hockey team, which fell to UMass Boston 2-1 in overtime Friday evening in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action at Levy Rink.

Freshman Julia Nolan (Duxbury, Mass.) potted the game-winner in overtime for UMB while senior Kat Armstrong (Boulder, Colo.) netted her second of the season for the Beacons, who held a 63-21 edge in shots. Sophomore Alyssa DePippo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) recorded 20 saves to move to 6-1-1 on the season.

The Bison were outshot 29-2 in the first period, but blocked seven shots and entered the intermission scoreless. Nichols went 0-for-3 with the man advantage while the Beacons were 0-for-2.

In the second, UMB held a 13-6 edge in shots but were still unable to push one past Goyette, who had 42 saves through the first 40 minutes. DiReda finally broke the scoreless tie when she redirected a shot from Sullivan past DePippo at 4:13 of the third period.

Less than three minutes later, the Beacons tied the score when Armstrong's shot from the point redirected off a Nichols' stick and tied the score at 6:44. Just past the midway point of the stanza, Nichols senior
Emily Wood (Wakefield, Mass.) was awarded a penalty shot, which was stopped by DePippo.

Nolan ended the game 1:52 into the extra session with a spinning backhand shot that snuck through the pads of Goyette. Nichols closed the evening 0-for-5 with the extra skater while the Beacons were 0-for-4.

Tonight's contest marked the 17th all-time meeting between UMass Boston and Nichols College. The Beacons are 9-1-0 in their last 10 against the Bison and 14-1-2 overall.
